The paper “A 16-Element 2.4-GHz Multi-Beam Array Receiver using 2-D Spatially-Bandpass Digital Filters” has been accepted at IEEE Trans. on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. Authors are Sravan Pulipati, Viduneth Ariyarathna, Chamira Edussooriya (University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka), Ravi Wijesekara (University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka), Len Bruton (University of Calgary, Canada) and Arjuna Madanayake.

New Paper on use of Blockchains for Spectrum Sharing

A paper titled “Dynamic Spectrum Access via Smart Contracts on Blockchain” has been accepted at IEEE WCNC 2019 to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, from
15-18 April 2019.  The co-authors are Thirasara Ariyarathna, Prabodha Harankahadeniya, Saarrah Isthikar, Nethmi Pathirana, Dilum Bandara and Arjuna Madanayake. The work was conducted at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and was part of a final year undergrad project in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Congratulations ladies!

Multibeam Abstract Accepted at mmW RCN 2019

The abstract titled “A Radix-2 Algorithm For Forming N  True-Time-Delay RF Beams at Complexity O(N logN)” has been accepted for presentation at the mmW Research Coordination Network (RCN) 2019. The abstract is authored by Dr. Shirani Perera (Embry-Riddle), Dr. Arjuna Madanayake, Viduneth Ariyarathna, and Udara De Silva.

The paper titled “Deep Learning based Radio-Signal Identification with Hardware Design” has been accepted at IEEE Trans. on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. The authors are Gihan Mendis, Jin Wei Kocsis, and Arjuna Madanayake.

New NSF SpecEES Award

The project titled “SpecEES: Collaborative Research: Spatially Oversampled Dense Multi-Beam Millimeter-Wave Communications for Exponentially Increased Energy-Efficiency” has been approved and starts today! The project is a 4-university collaborative project between the University of Akron, with lead-PI Arjuna Madanayake, Case Western Reserve University with PI Soumyajit Mandal, SUNY Stony Brook, with PI Xin Wang, and NYU-Tandon with PI Ted Rappaport. The project has a total value of $750,000, with equal share to each partner institution.

New Award from National Science Foundation

The NSF ECCS has awarded the University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University a collaborative proposal titled “Collaborative Research: Wideband Multi-Beam Antenna Arrays: Low-Complexity Algorithms and Analog-CMOS Implementations”. The award includes a sub-award to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Congratulations to co-investigators Dr. Shirani Perera, ERAU, and Dr. Soumyajit Mandal, CWRU. The project is part of NSF ECCS unsolicited programs with program manager Dr. Jenshan Lin. The award to UA is worth $224,975 including a $53,535 sub-award to ERAU. Collaborators include Dr. Renato Cintra, UFPE, Brazil, and Dr. Leo Belostotski, University of Calgary, Canada. The PIs are grateful to NSF for supporting this research on 5G wireless communications.

Sravan Pulipati has defended his MS. The thesis topic is “Electronically-Scanned Wideband Digital Aperture Antenna Arrays using Multi-Dimensional Space-Time Circuit-Network Resonance”. The project was co-advised by Dr. Arjuna Madanayake and Dr. Nghi Tran, with committee member Dr. Kye-Shin Lee, and was supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) STEM Program, with partial support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Sravan will be starting his PhD in Spring 2017 at the University of Akron. Deep congratulations to Sravan Pulipati.

Advanced ROACH2-FPGA workshop at NRAO Greenbank

A workshop covering advanced topics related to ROACH2 based digital system design was organized by Arjuna Madanayake in collaboration with John Ford, Arindam Sengupta and Jason Ray at the Greenbank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia.

This two-day workshop was attended by University of Akron graduate students Nilan Udayanga, Vishwa Seneviratne, Suranga Handagala, Sravan Pulipati, Reza Oliveira (visiting from UFPE, Brazil), and Gihan Mendis. The students learned advanced topics such as ROACH2 clock nets, 10 MHz reference oscillators, compiling for 16-input RF ADC, and designing communications using 10 Gbps Ethernet IP cores.

The highlight of the trip was the climb to the focal plane of the Robert C. Byrd telescope!

ASPC Lab hosts NE Ohio ROACH2 workshop

Dr. Arjuna Madanayake and Dr. Vijay Devabhaktuni organized the first NE Ohio undergraduate/graduate workshop on “ROACH2 based FPGA Systems” at the ASPC Lab on May 30 2015. Four students from the University of Toledo and six students from the University of Akron (including an exchange student from UFPE, Brazil) participated. This workshop is an NSF Broader Impacts activity.

Madanayake, Toonen and Zhu, with their collaborator Dr. Henderson at UT Dallas, has been awarded an NSF ECCS Collaborative Award “Enhancement of Radio Wave Beams Carrying Extrinsic Orbital Angular Momentum: Multi-Dimensional Array Processors, Multiferroic Antennas, and RF Integrated Circuits”. The 3-year project is led by Arjuna Madanayake.

ASPC doctoral graduate Nilanka Rajapaksha is moving to San Jose California to join Xilinx. Dr Rajapaksha will be working as a software engineer for the “Device Modeling Group” dealing with propagation delay models for Xilinx FPGA Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. NSF-EARS undergraduate research experience gets underway

NSF REU students Nathan and DeGrafth with high-school intern Julia succeeded in designing, simulating, fabricating and measuring a monopole antenna tuned at 2.4 GHz. They used CST Microwave Studio and J.D. Kraus’s textbook to design the antenna and an Agilent VNA to do the measurements.

The kick-off meeting for our NSF EARS research is held at Norfolk State University in Virginia.

Dr Todor Cooklev, Director of the Wireless Technologies Center at Purdue-Indiana, delivers a research seminar on “Modern Wireless Systems” as well as a guest lecture in Dr Madanayake’s digital logic design class.

Our joint paper with Sean Hum at the University of Toronto and Len Bruton at the University of Calgary, Canada, entitled
“Effects of Quantization in Systolic 2D IIR Beam Filters on UWB Wireless Communications”  has been accepted for publication
at the Journal of Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing (CSSP). Congratulations Sean and Len!

Chamith Wijenayake delivers an invited seminar and paper at the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, entitled “Analog/Digital VLSI 2D Beam/Fan Filter Circuits For UWB Smart Antenna Arrays: A Review”. The paper is co-authored by Arjuna Madanayake, Leo Belostotski, and Len Bruton.

Arjuna and Renato visit the Wireless Technology Center at Indiana University – Purdue University, Fort Wayne, IN.

Renato delivers a guest lecture on trigonometric transforms, fast algorithms, and number-theory for the graduate course “Advanced Array Signal Processing”. Thanks for the excellent lecture!

The joint paper with Dr. Len Bruton titled “Systolic-Array 3D Wave-Digital Beam Filters” is accepted for future publication at the IEEE 2010 Asia Pacific Symposium on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS‘2010) to be held in Malaysia, in December 2010.

Nilanka’s paper on “Raster-Scanned Wave-Digital Filter Architectures for Multi-Beam 2D IIR Broadband Beamforming” (with Chamith and Len Bruton) is accepted for presentation at IEEE ICM‘2010 in Cairo, Egypt this December. Great job, Nilanka and Chamith!

The joint paper with our collaborators Ranga Rodrigo, Len Bruton, and 4 undergraduate researchers at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, titled “Scanned-Array Audio Beamforming using 2nd- and 3rd-Order 2D IIR Beam Filters on FPGA” is accepted for presentation at IEEE ICM‘2010 in Cairo, Egypt. Well done, team.

Renato Cintra (with Vassil Dimitrov as co-author) delivers an invited lecture on his recent contribution on “An Arithmetic Method for the Discrete Fourier Transform”. Slides are available here.n

The paper “Massively-parallel systolic-array architectures for 2D IIR polyphase space-time plane-wave beam digital filters”  (with Thushara Gunaratne and Len Bruton) has been accepted for future publication at the International Journal of Circuit Theory and Applications (CTA) [Impact Factor =2.011].

David Zanella and Adrien Chassot from Switzerland start their internship at the University of Akron. Adrien will be working on a custom board for multidimensional-DSP using Achronix FPGA technology. David will work on a client-server interface to our filter algorithms database using Matlab NE.

Chamith’s paper “FPGA Prototypes of Differential-Form 2D-IIR Systolic-Array DSP Architectures for Multi-Beam Plane-Wave Filters” has been accepted for publication at IEEE SIPS‘2010 to be held in California. Congratulations Chamith!
